Planning a wedding or elopement in Iceland?

One of the first questions couples ask us is: When is the best time to take wedding photos in Iceland?

The truth is, there’s no single perfect season.

Iceland looks completely different throughout the year, and every month has its own magic.

From endless summer sunsets and blooming lupines to snowy black sand beaches and northern lights dancing above waterfalls, the best season really depends on the atmosphere you want for your wedding photos.

As photographers living and working in Iceland, we’ve seen every kind of weather imaginable, sometimes all in one day.

Here’s our honest guide to Iceland’s seasons and what you can expect for your wedding or elopement photography.

Summer in Iceland (June – August)

A small man in a red jacket stands on a misty, barren hilltop surrounded by fog and brown ridges, creating a sense of isolation and adventure.

Summer is the most popular season for weddings and elopements in Iceland, and for good reason.

The days are incredibly long, temperatures are milder, and the landscape becomes intensely green.

One of our favorite things about Icelandic summers is the famous midnight sun.

Around June and July, the sun barely sets, creating soft golden light late into the evening.

For photography, it’s honestly a dream.

Summer is also the season of:

  • blooming purple lupines,

  • accessible highland roads,

  • green moss-covered landscapes,

  • calmer driving conditions,

  • and dramatic golden sunsets.

The downside? Iceland is busiest during summer, especially around famous locations like the South Coast or Golden Circle.

Popular spots can get crowded during the day, so we usually recommend sunrise or late-evening sessions for a more intimate atmosphere.

If you’re dreaming about adventurous landscapes, warm light, and colorful scenery, summer is hard to beat.

Fall in Iceland (September – October)

Fall is probably one of the most underrated seasons for wedding photography in Iceland.

The crowds begin to disappear, the weather becomes moodier, and the colors start changing into deep oranges, yellows, and earthy tones.

Iceland feels quieter and more cinematic during autumn.

September is especially amazing because you can sometimes get the best of both worlds:

  • relatively mild weather,

  • colorful landscapes,

  • and even the first northern lights appearances.

We love photographing couples during this season because Iceland feels more raw and emotional. The wind, dramatic skies, and softer tourist traffic create a completely different vibe compared to summer.

If you want wedding photos that feel adventurous, romantic, and atmospheric, fall might actually be your perfect season.

Winter in Iceland (November – March)

A black church with a white cross sits in a snowy landscape, framed by a white picket fence and a pale sky, evoking a serene mood.

Winter in Iceland is wild, unpredictable, and unbelievably beautiful.

This is the season for couples dreaming about:

  • snowy mountains,

  • frozen waterfalls,

  • black sand beaches covered in ice,

  • cozy moody vibes,

  • and hopefully- northern lights.

The light during winter is softer and lower all day long, which creates beautiful cinematic tones in photos.

Even midday can look like golden hour.

Of course, winter also comes with challenges.

Storms can happen suddenly, roads may close, and flexibility becomes extremely important.

But honestly? Some of the most emotional and unforgettable weddings we’ve photographed happened during Icelandic winter weather.

And yes, seeing the aurora during your elopement photos is every bit as magical as it sounds.

If you love dramatic landscapes and don’t mind embracing Iceland’s unpredictable nature, winter can be absolutely incredible.

Spring in Iceland (April – May)

Spring in Iceland feels like nature slowly waking up again.

The snow starts melting, waterfalls become stronger, and the days grow noticeably longer.

It’s also one of the quieter seasons for travel, which means many locations feel peaceful and less crowded.

Spring weather can still be very unpredictable, sometimes snowy, sometimes sunny, sometimes both within an hour.

But that’s honestly part of Iceland’s charm.

For couples who want:

  • fewer tourists,

  • lower travel costs,

  • dramatic skies,

  • and a mix of winter and summer landscapes,

spring can be an amazing option.

May especially starts feeling greener again, while still keeping that raw Icelandic atmosphere we love so much.

So… when is the best time?

Honestly? The best time for wedding photos in Iceland depends on your vision.

If you want:

  • green landscapes & lupines → summer,

  • moody cinematic vibes → fall,

  • snow & northern lights → winter,

  • quiet adventurous landscapes → spring.

No matter the season, Iceland always brings something unique.

The weather may change quickly, but that unpredictability often creates the most unforgettable moments and photographs.

That’s why we always tell our couples: don’t chase “perfect weather.” Embrace the experience.

Iceland is beautiful precisely because it’s wild, emotional, and impossible to fully control.

And trust us, those windswept moments often become the photos people remember forever.
